22/01/2012At the moment I am burning a bit of coal that someone gave me for free. I agonised about what to do with it, asked friends, and decided that I would use it to help heat our home on our multifuel cleanburn stoves. So add about 300kg coal to my fossil CO2 footprint over the next year or so.438.26511335
22/01/2012Based on wiki answers dot com, which says a kilo of coal makes 1.83kg CO2, the approx 300kg coal I'm going to burn this year (assuming it is used in 12 months) will emit 550kg CO2, meaning that my share is 137kg fossil carbon added to my footprint. Now how do I add that to my graph?438.26511335
I use many different systems* to track my carbon as you know. I simply don't find this one very useful or user-friendly. It isn't one that i would recommend to clients, so I don't use it myself.
Hence the lack of recent readings.
Thanks for prodding me to update it anyway, and I have now done so, (for your benefit, more than for mine.)
Please be aware that I MAY not do so again - as is my perfect right - without you passing uninformed judgement on me or others who don't update their 'the carbon account' - for their own reasons - reasons you probably won't know :)
*e.g. The main one I use is Donnachadh McCarthy's Nat Carb Footprint Day to record annual readings on Oct 1st each year, along with other methods. I use the Resurgence one too.
As much as i once liked the site, I have several issues with the carbon account the largest of which is despite the fact the claim over 2000 users, most of them have never submitted a reading, i assume this because once they have signed up they find the service lacking in some way. Personally i found it a little lacking in information, ease of use, and unmaintained. Don’t think i am not thankful for the carbon account service though, it is just about the only service of its kind out there (that i can find), and seems to be good at what it claims to do, which is calculate your CO2 output from inputted data. However, although they tell you the UK national average, this bares little relevance to the individual, as no one is the average, you may be a single man living alone or a family of 12. This is why i have tried to establish a service aimed more at a small number of users, with features that i feel are missing from the carbon account. I especially look forward to receiving your water reading, as i have not had much for comparison in this utility.
I to look forward to receiving your data. Although i have had the site for a few months i have been unable to gain much interest, however i don't want to much interest as i would be overwhelmed with data to process. At present i would be happy with about 25 users, but have only 8 so far including myself. There are several draw backs with my site i admit, i do not have support for cars or flights, however i feel the data for these is likely to be incorrect on this site, but that's just my personal opinion. I do however support water consumption related data and provide more information that simply CO2 outputs. Also due to the way i have designed the "technical parts" i can easily import a great deal of data easily. For example if i was sent an exported copy of your previous data from the carbon account i can add this to my system with ease. Whilst i aim to provide accurate and helpful results based upon supplied data i openly admit i am not a professional and the service i am trying to provide is simply as a hobby.
Hi there. Unfortunately my gas readings go a little messed up, and i have been bothered to go back and submit them all again. I have just tried to make it a little better, but the information for gas is not correct. My gas usage should look something like this:
Hello there, I hope you don’t mind me sending you this comment but I just wanted to share something with you. I was very please when I found the carbon account website, as you may have noticed there are not really any other solutions out there at the moment, despite the growing number of people who have an interest in been environmentally aware. However, it was not long before I felt the carbon account had some limitations as you may have noticed and so I decided to start my own utility consumption website with an aim to offer a better service to a select few. As one of the few people who appear to be actually using the carbon account I wanted to share this with you. I won’t waste your time by telling you all about my website but instead I will let you judge for yourself. I hope you will take the time to visit and if nothing else provide some much appreciated feedback. The site is UCRlive.weebly.com (Utility Consumption Record live).
O great, put my first readings in, and I go up! Obviously I can cut my carbon by joining good energy, just the car that's the problem! Problem is I need it for work, and as it's a company car, I can't change it this year:-(
Hi John, Thanks for your comment on my profile. It would be good to take my job into account on here. Perhaps I could then claim minus 118,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent savings from the 137,000+ tonnes of household waste we recycled last year (51% of total in Somerset). We'll be publishing stats on this soon with our recycling end-use register for last year at www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. Congrats on your near unbeatable profile (which should exclude the added flights as these weren't your responsibility). All the best, Dave
cor blimey john thats a great footprint! well done my electric is good energy so i can deduct that next time i reveise the input i thought i'd start high! good on yer tho' i could blame wife kids dogs cats etc but i wont thanks for keeping me on toes dave
