Your account and personal information
In order to track your carbon emissions we need to take data about your domestic energy use (gas, electricity etc.), as well as your vehicle mileage and any flights you choose to tell us about. In future we may want to use the data captured in the Carbon Account to build regional statistics. Any statistics we produce will be anonymised and aggregated across all users and not linked to personally identifiable data. We will never share non-anonymised data with any third parties.
We need to collect some personal information in order to track your emissions:
Your email address. We take this so we can identify you as a unique user and send you reminder emails. We will never share your email address with a third party. You can set how often you receive reminder emails (if ever) by visiting your profile section once logged in. We may very occasionally send you an email to inform you of a change to how the site is used or if there is a problem with your account.
Your mobile number. You can choose to give us your mobile phone number so that in future we can integrate the Carbon Account with SMS features (e.g. so you can text how much fuel you have just put in your car). If and when these features become available we will send you a notification email. If you choose to give us your mobile number we will only ever use it for this purpose. We will never share your number with a third party, and we will never send you unsolicited SMS or call you.
Your postcode. We take your postcode so that we have some idea of what part of the country you are from. In future we may use this information to build statistics about regional carbon emissions but this will always be anonymous. Any statistics we produce will be aggregated across all users and not linked to personally identifiable data.
Your vehicle registration. When you first register on the site we ask you for your vehicle's registration. The reason we do this is so that we can pick up the emissions factor for your vehicle's particular make and model. This information is held already by the DVLA and we simply tap into their database (via an agreement with Carweb) to retrieve the information. We do not share your car registration with any third parties. If you do not wish to enter your car registration you can enter your vehicle information manually but your emissions tracking may not be as accurate.
The Carbon Account is a community site and we encourage users to interact with each other. When you register your profile is automatically set to 'public' and this means that other users can browse your profile. If you would prefer for you profile not to be public, you can change your settings in your profile, which can be accessed via the top-right of the screen once you are logged in.
If you choose to keep your profile public, via the 'People' page, other users will be able to view your emissions graph and send you messages (via email, though they will not see your email address). Users will also be able to add you as a friend, and by doing so, you will appear on their profile as one of their friends. Other users will never be able to access any personal information; the only information they ever see is your emissions graph, footprint figures (including your target), and any comments written on your profile.
